Toilet clog removal

A toilet clog is the kind of problem where "waiting until tomorrow" is usually not an option. Still, half the cases are solved at home in 10 minutes if you know the right order of steps. For the rest, you will need a plumber — and it matters how you describe the situation on the phone.

First — stop

  • Do not flush again. If the water did not drain on the first flush and is rising, a second flush will simply pour onto the floor.
  • If water is close to the rim, shut off the supply to the tank — the valve is at the back or underneath.
  • Assess: is the water clean or with waste? That matters for the plumber and for how urgently you should act.
  • Check other drains in the apartment. If only the toilet is blocked, the plug is in the toilet or its outlet. If water also will not drain in the tub or sink, the stack or shared outlet is blocked — more serious.

What to try yourself

  1. Plunger. Ideally a "toilet" plunger (with a rubber flange). Seat it firmly over the outlet, 10–15 energetic strokes. The water should "audibly" go down.
  2. Hot water. A bucket (5–8 litres) of hot water (not boiling!) from above. Often dissolves paper and organic plugs.
  3. Baking soda + vinegar. Half a pack of soda, then a cup of vinegar, and 15 minutes later a bucket of hot water. Works on fresh organic plugs.
  4. Hand snake. A toilet snake (with a scratch-protected tip) 3–5 m long — if the plug is nearby and you have experience. Without experience, better not — the enamel scratches easily.

If water still will not drain after a plunger and hot water — stop. Going further, you will most likely not fix it and may drop an object into the toilet.

Typical causes of a "dead" blockage

  • Rags, nappies, wet wipes. "Flushable" on the packaging does not mean they dissolve.
  • A child's toy. A standard story in families with children aged 2–4.
  • Hygiene products. They should not be in the toilet, even with a "flushable" label.
  • Hard items accidentally dropped — phone, brush, deodorant cap.
  • Buildup on the inner wall — typical in apartments with hard water.

How the plumber works

  • Determines where the plug sits: in the toilet itself, in the outlet to the stack, or already in the stack.
  • Tries a snake with a soft head through the toilet — to avoid damaging the enamel or pushing anything deeper.
  • If a foreign object is suspected, the toilet may be removed to retrieve it. That is a bigger job.
  • If the toilet is clean and the plug is in the stack, the snake is fed via the inspection tee rather than through the toilet.

What it costs

  • Toilet clearing with a snake — ILS 300–500
  • Removing and reinstalling the toilet — ILS 700–1,100
  • Stack clearing via inspection access — ILS 600–900
  • Night or Shabbat emergency call-out — +40–80%

How to avoid a repeat

  • Put a bin next to the toilet — even if "everything is flushable." Trust us.
  • Brief the kids: no toys in the toilet, not even as a joke.
  • Every 3–6 months, use a bio preventer (bacteria) to stop buildup on the walls.
  • Make sure the cistern flushes at full volume (3/6 litres). A weak flush is a common cause of accumulated plugs.

FAQ

Will "Krot" or "Mr. Muscle" help in a toilet?

On organic plugs (paper, waste), maybe, but slowly and not always. On a foreign object, useless. Chemistry does not stay long in the toilet (the U-bend), and most of it goes further down the pipe.

Can I punch through the toilet with a plastic bottle?

You can (cut off the bottom and use it as a mini plunger), but a regular plunger is more effective and does not scratch the enamel. The bottle is a last resort when nothing else is on hand.

Dropped a phone in the toilet, it got flushed — can it be retrieved?

If the toilet clogged right after, there is a chance the phone is in the S-bend or the outlet. The plumber will remove the toilet and retrieve it. If it flushed through, the phone is somewhere in the stack or the main collector — recovery is almost impossible.

The shared stack is blocked — who calls and who pays?

Formally — the building committee (ועד בית). In practice, if it is urgent at your place, it is faster to call yourself, get a stack blockage report and bill the committee. Keep the documents.
