Cartridge replacement looks like the simplest filter job, but it is also the one most often postponed for too long. An overdue cartridge means lower flow, worse taste and extra strain on the whole system, especially in RO or multi-stage units.
When the cartridge is already due for replacement
- Flow has dropped. This is one of the most common signs.
- Bad taste or odour has returned. The media has likely reached the end of its useful life.
- The scheduled service date has passed. Even if the water still seems acceptable.
- The line carried dirty water after repair works or an outage. A cartridge can clog much earlier in that case.
Why it is not always just “unscrew and swap”
- Housings often seize up. Without the right tool and care, they are easy to crack.
- The stage order matters. In multi-stage systems it is easy to mix cartridges up.
- Flushing is needed after replacement. Especially with carbon media and drinking-water systems.
- Seals are checked at the same time. Otherwise a leak may show up right after service.

Can cartridges be changed less often if very little water is used?
Sometimes the interval can be stretched slightly, but not indefinitely. Carbon and drinking-water media age with time as well as with water volume.
Why is the water cloudy or bubbly right after replacement?
That is often normal during the flush phase because air and fine dust are leaving the new media. If the issue remains after proper flushing, the system should be checked.
Do all cartridges have to be changed at once?
It depends on the layout. In many multi-stage systems they are changed as a set so one old stage does not overload the rest.
