How to Clean Dust and Sand from an Apartment

After a dusty day, sand is obvious on the sill, while finer particles settle on furniture, fabric and air-conditioner filters. Dry sweeping can put those particles back into the air. A good cleaning sequence collects dirt without carrying it to the next room. Dusty weather occurs in Israel, but the work depends on whether particles entered through windows alone or have also accumulated around the ventilation system.

Wait for better outdoor conditions

Check current local air-quality advice before opening windows. If it remains dusty outside, a strong draft can undo the cleanup. Once outdoor conditions improve, ventilate as appropriate and start collecting settled particles. People who are particularly sensitive to dust may wish to stay out of rooms during intensive cleaning. Anyone with a respiratory condition should follow their own clinical advice rather than treating cleaning as a medical remedy.

Work from high surfaces down

Remove bed linen and washable covers carefully without shaking them in the room; follow care labels. Check insect screens, high shelves, blinds, sills and door frames. Pick up larger grains with a soft vacuum attachment, then wipe accessible surfaces with a slightly damp microfiber cloth. Rinse or replace the cloth as it loads with dirt. The EPA recommends damp dusting and a HEPA-filter vacuum to help keep particles from becoming airborne again.

Do not spray cleaner over electrical fittings, screens or wood joints. Clean electronics according to their maker's instructions. Window tracks deserve care: grit can scratch the frame and make a sash difficult to close. Vacuum loose grains first, wipe reachable tracks afterward and dry them. Forcing a gritty window shut may damage its hardware.

Leave floors and textiles until last

Vacuum rugs and upholstered furniture slowly, especially edges and seams. Empty the container and maintain filters as the appliance manual directs; an overloaded vacuum performs poorly. On hard floors, lift the dry grit before mopping with a product suitable for the surface. Moving a wet mop through a layer of sand can drag abrasive grains across the finish. Use little water on laminate or timber and dry promptly.

Check the air-conditioner filter

Switch the unit off and inspect only the user-accessible filter described in the manual. Wash a reusable filter and let it dry completely before refitting; replace a disposable one. Do not open electrical parts or hidden ductwork for routine cleaning. If dust returns quickly with windows closed, inspect screens, seals and air inlets. A musty smell, weak airflow or dirty inaccessible components calls for air-conditioner service, not another pass with the floor mop.

When requesting a cleaner, describe floor area, number of windows and screens, rugs, floor materials, filter access and the amount of settled dirt. Ask separately about curtains, upholstery and safely accessible exterior glass. At handover, test a high shelf and a window track with a clean cloth and check the floor for grit. Our range-hood filter guide covers a different type of household buildup.
