RO repair often starts with complaints like “the water barely comes out” or “the system suddenly started leaking”. But these units have several possible failure points: overdue prefilters, membrane wear, tank problems, flow restrictors, valves or simply poor incoming pressure.
The most common symptoms
- Very weak flow at the drinking tap.
- The tank does not fill or empties too quickly.
- The system is noisy, gurgles or seems to flush forever.
- Leaks have appeared in tubes, housings or fittings.
What is usually checked during diagnosis
- The age and condition of the prefilters. Very often the problem starts there rather than in the membrane.
- The condition of the membrane. An old membrane reduces production significantly.
- Tank pressure and check-valve function.
- The incoming water pressure. Without enough feed pressure even a technically sound RO unit performs badly.
When repair makes sense and when parts should simply be replaced
- Tubes, fittings and seals are usually repaired or replaced locally.
- The membrane and prefilters are more often treated as service consumables.
- An old tank or tired drinking tap is often better replaced than revived.
- A very old unmaintained system may already justify full replacement.
Typical prices in Israel
- Reverse osmosis repair — from 310 ₪
- Membrane, prefilters, fittings or tank — charged separately after diagnosis
- If the system has been neglected for a long time — the repair may effectively become a full service rebuild
FAQ
If the water comes out very slowly, is the membrane always to blame?
No. Weak flow can also be caused by clogged prefilters, low feed pressure, tank problems or faulty valves.
Why does RO suddenly become much noisier?
Noise can come from air in the system, pressure fluctuations, a dirty restrictor or tank issues. It is better to diagnose that rather than ignore it.
Is an old RO system worth repairing or should it be replaced completely?
If the unit is good quality and the issue is local, repair is sensible. But very old systems with poor service history are often better replaced.
