A sewerage design is not only for new construction. In Israel it is ordered for villa renovations, basement bathrooms, guest units, yard rerouting and municipal coordination. A good design solves three things at once: the drains flow without clogging, odours stay out of the house, and installers have a precise plan to build from.
When it is risky to proceed without a design
- New house or villa. Internal drainage, yard network and the municipal tie-in have to work as one system.
- Moving a bathroom. Especially when the toilet ends up far from the existing riser.
- Basement, mamad, lower-ground floor. A pump, pit and dedicated venting are often required.
- Garden יחידת דיור or guesthouse. You need to define the route, depth and method of connection.
- Old villa with recurring failures. The design becomes a reconstruction plan, not just paperwork.
What a sewerage design includes
- Fixture layout. Toilets, showers, sinks, kitchen, laundry and floor drains.
- Pipe routing plan. Diameters, slopes, bends, clean-outs and manholes.
- Vertical diagram. Risers, vent stacks and floor-by-floor connections.
- External network. Exit from the house, yard drains, inspection chambers and tie-in to the city main or septic.
- Material schedule. PP, PVC, HDPE, fittings, valves, covers and pumps if needed.
What mistakes the design prevents
- Insufficient slope. Water moves, solids stay behind.
- Too many 90° bends. These become future blockage and camera/rodding trouble points.
- No venting. Traps lose seal and the house smells of sewage.
- Overlong horizontal toilet branch. Works poorly and noisily.
- Wrong burial depth outdoors. That creates a negative fall or clashes with foundations and drainage.
Codes and approvals in Israel
The designer usually works to ת"י 1205.3 and related sanitary codes. For internal systems, the critical issues are pipe diameters, slopes, venting and service access. For the external network — burial depth, manholes and the tie-in point to the municipal system. If the facade changes, the connection point changes, or a new housing unit is created, coordination with the municipal engineering department and a signed engineering plan may be required.
Timeline and prices
- Small apartment / one moved bathroom — 1,200–2,500 ILS
- Villa with a yard network — 2,500–6,000 ILS
- Complex design with basement and sewage pumping — 4,000–8,500 ILS
- Lead time — 2 to 10 working days depending on existing drawings and site inspection
FAQ
Can a sewer system be built “on site” without a design?
For replacing one small section of pipe — yes. For a new bathroom, villa, basement, yard network or guest unit — that usually leads to rework. The design costs less than opening the floor twice.
Who may sign a sewerage design in Israel?
For minor domestic works, an experienced plumber’s technical sketch may be enough. For official approval, a new house, a complex external network or a new tie-in, a licensed engineer or sanitary-systems designer is usually required.
Do I need a design if I am only moving the toilet by 2–3 metres?
Not always formally, but technically it is strongly recommended. Short relocations are exactly where slope, diameter and venting mistakes create odours and repeat clogs.
