Pipe leak repair

A cracked pipe is one of the nastiest emergencies: water seeps into the screed and concrete and the damage grows by the hour. Here's what you can do before the plumber arrives and what repair options exist.

First thing: shut off the water

If it's a supply pipe, close the main valve at the water meter. If it's a drain (grey) pipe, don't use the sink, toilet or washing machine until the plumber arrives — even if it seems like "just a little".

Pipe type matters for the repair

  • Metal (steel, galvanised) — common in older Israeli housing. A local patch is possible, but usually a section replacement is needed: everything nearby is "tired" too.
  • Polypropylene (PPR) — repaired by welding; the bad section is cut out and a new piece fused in.
  • PEX/multilayer — usually the fitting or the section between connections is replaced.
  • PVC drain pipe — the tee or section is replaced using a new rubber gasket.

Temporary fixes

While waiting for the plumber you can reduce the leak: wrap the section in reinforced duct tape (silver tape) over a dry rag, use two-part epoxy putty, or add a pipe clamp. This is not a repair, just a way to buy a couple of hours without flooding the neighbours.

How much it costs in Israel

  • Replacing a joint or fitting — 300–550 ₪
  • Replacing a visible plastic pipe section — 400–750 ₪
  • Opening the wall/screed to reach a hidden pipe — +500–1,500 ₪ (depends on finish)
  • Replacing a bathroom stack — from 1,500 ₪
  • Shabbat emergency call-out — +50–100% on top of the base price

Finish restoration (tiles, plaster, paint) is usually billed separately and done by a different specialist.

When insurance will cover the repair

Most ביטוח דירה (home insurance) policies cover damage from a sudden leak, but require using the insurer's emergency crew and photo/video documentation. If you fix everything yourself before documenting, the insurer may refuse. Save the evidence first.

FAQ

Can I tape a cracked pipe and keep using it?

Only as a stopgap for a couple of hours before the plumber arrives. Reinforced tape and epoxy hold pressure for a limited time, and the pipe next to the crack is already weakened — the fault will spread.

How do you find exactly where a leak is if the pipe is in the wall?

Plumbers use thermal imaging and pressure testing (pushing air into the pipe under pressure). Hidden leak detection in Israel costs 500–1,200 ₪, but they open up only the exact spot with the fault.

Do I need to replace the whole pipe or can I just change a section?

Depends on material and age. Plastic can be fixed locally; galvanised pipes 20+ years old are usually worth replacing stack-wise — saving money on a spot fix in an old system often means another call-out six months later.

Who patches the wall after the pipe is replaced?

The plumber seals the chase with rough plaster. Final finishing (tiles, paint, decorative plaster) is done by a tiler or painter — that's a separate job and cost.
