The difference between "drain cleaning" and "emergency drain cleaning" is time. While water stands in the apartment, every minute works against you: laminate swells, moisture soaks into the screed beneath tiles, and the neighbours downstairs are already on the phone. Here is what to do right now.
What counts as an emergency
- Water is backing up into the toilet, sink or shower trap and will not drain.
- When the washing machine or dishwasher drains, water overflows from another fixture.
- Drainage from the apartment goes into the shaft or into the neighbour's unit below.
- A strong sewer smell spreads through the whole apartment — may mean a ruptured trap or a detached outlet.
A regular clog, where the sink just drains slowly, is not an emergency. It can wait for tomorrow's day rate and save you 30–50%.
What to do before the plumber arrives
- Do not add more water — do not flush, do not start the washing machine or dishwasher. Every litre means more to clean up.
- If water is standing in the tub or toilet, plug the drain with a cloth so the contents do not flow into the apartment.
- Clear anything valuable from the bathroom floor (boxes, electronics, extension cords).
- Close the main apartment water valve if you are not sure something else will not start leaking.
- If you have already flooded a neighbour, do not wait for them to knock — knock on their door and warn them. It will matter later for damage assessment and insurance.
How much an emergency call-out costs
- Weekday daytime call-out (until 18:00) — standard cleaning rate, ILS 250–600.
- Evening after 18:00 — +30–50%.
- Night (22:00–07:00) — +50–80%.
- Shabbat and holidays — +50–100%, sometimes a double rate.
- Complex stack blockage, hydro-jet call-out — ILS 900–1,800.
Worth knowing: some plumbers charge a fixed call-out fee (ILS 150–250) plus separate labour. Others quote "all-inclusive." Clarify before they arrive so there are no surprises.
How long to wait
In the centre of the country (Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, Givatayim, Petah Tikva, Rishon, Bat Yam), 30–90 minutes during the day is typical. Nights and Shabbat — 1–2 hours. In Ashdod, Ashkelon, Haifa and the north, it depends on on-call crews, sometimes 2–3 hours. The sooner you post a task on KABLAY, the more plumbers will see it.
Insurance and compensation
If you have already flooded neighbours, keep every document: the plumber's report stating the cause of the blockage (in your apartment or in the shared stack), photos, receipts. Under ביטוח מבנה (building insurance) and ביטוח צד ג׳ (third-party liability), damage to neighbours is often covered, but only if the report exists.
Frequently asked
Will they come at night or on Shabbat?
Some specialists advertise night, Shabbat and holiday callouts, but you must confirm availability and arrival time directly. KABLAY does not guarantee that a specialist will respond or arrive within any stated time.
What do I do if the neighbours downstairs are already calling and shouting?
Calmly acknowledge it and tell them a plumber is on the way. Ask them to photograph the damage — it will help with the insurance claim. Do not pay "cash right now" before the damage is assessed.
Why is a night drain cleaning twice the price?
At night and on Shabbat plumbers charge premium rates (a standard in Israel), and often a second person is needed. If the situation can wait until morning, waiting saves money.
Can I just shut off the water and go to bed until morning?
If water is already standing in the bathroom and rising — no, it will seep through the screed to the downstairs neighbour by morning. If you managed to shut things off before overflow and drainage is not rising, waiting until morning is fine.
