Wall tiling exposes faults in the substrate, rows and corners. Plan full tiles, cuts and service openings before adhesive is mixed.
Inspect the wall
Check plaster strength, plumb, moisture and substrate type. A painted or weak surface may need removal or a compatible primer. In a shower, waterproofing and junctions must be specified before tiling.
Plan rows and openings
Ask for a layout showing the wall centre, row heights, corners, niches, mixer outlets and sockets. Moving the starting line may avoid narrow cuts in prominent places. Large or heavy tiles need a suitable adhesive system.
Define completion
Itemise old tile removal, levelling, primer, waterproofing, holes, trims, grout and silicone. Inspect flatness, joint lines, exposed edges and junctions at handover. Fit heavy fixtures only after the chosen system has cured as instructed.
For your request

Frequently asked
Can new tiles go over old wall tiles?
Sometimes, if the old finish is secure and the added weight and thickness are acceptable. Loose tiles or trapped moisture need investigation first.
Who cuts openings for pipes and sockets?
Specify this in the quote. The tiler can cut the facing; moving plumbing or electrical points is a separate trade.
Is grout enough waterproofing for a shower?
No. A shower needs a waterproofing system behind the tile, including corners and penetrations.
