Overlay can avoid demolition only when the old floor is sound and the added height works at every threshold and drain.
Test the existing floor
The tiler should tap for hollow areas and check movement, cracks, moisture and base stability. Loose tiles or signs of a leak need diagnosis. A new layer does not repair a failing substrate.
Measure the height
Add tile and adhesive thickness. Check door clearance, thresholds, kitchen plinths, furniture, steps and drains. In wet areas the new surface must preserve falls and waterproofing junction heights.
Preparation and comparison
Clean and prepare the surface using a compatible system. Compare two complete quotes: overlay and demolition followed by base repair. Include door trimming and transition profiles where needed.

- Cracks, hollow or loose areas.
- Threshold heights and door clearance.
- Drains, water exposure and wet areas.
- New tile size and planned layout.
Frequently asked
Can hollow tiles be covered?
Not before their cause is understood. The new layer relies on the old one, so weak sections and the underlying base must be assessed.
Is overlay always cheaper?
No. Preparation, doors, transitions and slope corrections may erase the saving. Compare full quotes.
Does it work in a shower?
Only after checking waterproofing, falls and heights. Overlay does not solve a hidden leak.
