A thermostatic mixer is convenient while it does what it should: you set a temperature and get stable water. But hard water, scale, sand and uneven pressure quickly push it out of that comfort zone.
Typical fault symptoms
- The temperature changes by itself.
- The mixer hardly gives hot or cold water.
- The control handle moves stiffly.
- There is dripping after shut-off.
What usually fails
- The thermostatic element. It sticks or stops reacting correctly.
- Inlet screens and filters. They clog with scale and debris.
- Seals and ceramic shut-off parts.
- Body parts. More rarely, but a crack usually makes repair doubtful.
What the repair includes
- Diagnosing pressure and hot/cold balance.
- Disassembling and cleaning the mixer.
- Replacing the thermostatic element or seals.
- Reassembly and temperature calibration.
- Operational test.
When replacement is the better choice
- No spare parts are available.
- The body is old and worn.
- The repair price is close to a new unit.
- The building water conditions are unstable.
Typical prices in Israel
- Thermostatic mixer repair — 280–650 ₪
- With replacement of the thermostatic element — higher depending on part cost
- If difficult descaling and teardown are needed — an extra charge may apply
Frequently asked
Why does a thermostatic mixer stop holding temperature?
Most often because of scale, clogged inlet filters, a worn thermostatic cartridge or a strong imbalance between hot and cold pressure.
Can a thermostatic mixer be cleaned without changing parts?
Sometimes yes, especially if contamination is the cause. But if the thermostatic element itself is worn, cleaning alone will not solve it.
If it drips, is that always related to the thermostat element?
Not always. Dripping can also come from the shut-off section, scale or damaged seals.
