A puddle around the base of the toilet or constant running in the tank rarely "fixes itself". Here's how to find the source quickly and decide whether you can handle it or need a plumber.
Where it's leaking: 4 typical scenarios
- From the tank into the bowl (water keeps running) — the flapper or fill valve is worn; you can hear a faint trickle.
- Between the tank and the bowl — the rubber gasket or tank bolts have lost their seal.
- At the base of the toilet — the wax ring/cuff between the bowl and the sewer pipe, or the flange seal.
- Water supply to the tank — flex hose, shut-off valve or the fill valve inlet.
Quick diagnosis
Dry the toilet and the floor, then place dry paper towels around the base and behind the tank. Check back in 15–30 minutes to see where the moisture shows up — that's your source. If there's only water on the floor after a flush, it's almost certainly the wax ring at the base.
What you can do yourself
- Turn off the supply valve at the toilet (usually on the left or behind the tank).
- Tighten the tank-to-bowl bolts — gently; ceramic cracks easily.
- Replace the flexible supply hose — a cheap part available at any חנות בנייה.
- Clean mineral deposits off the float valve — sometimes that's all it takes.
The wax ring at the base is trickier: the bowl has to come off, and if it's reseated incorrectly you'll get another leak. That one's a job for a plumber.
How much toilet repair costs in Israel
- Tank internals replacement (fill valve + flapper) — 250–450 ₪ including parts
- Replacing the flex hose and supply valve — 200–350 ₪
- Reseating the toilet with a new wax ring — 400–800 ₪
- Full toilet replacement — from 700 ₪ labour plus the cost of the unit
When it's urgent
If water is seeping under the tiles or the neighbours below see damp patches on their ceiling — don't delay. Mould and screed damage in a bathroom set in within 2–3 weeks.
Frequently asked
Why does my toilet keep running?
Usually a worn rubber flapper or a fill valve that isn't closing tightly. A plumber swaps the internals in 30–60 minutes.
How much does it cost to replace toilet tank internals?
In Israel in 2026 — 250–450 ₪ including parts and labour. For a concealed (wall-hung) cistern the price is higher: 450–800 ₪.
The toilet is leaking from underneath — how urgent is it?
Quite urgent: water under the tiles causes the base to lift and mould to form, and the neighbours below will see ceiling stains. Best to call a plumber the same day and stop using the toilet until it's fixed.
Can I replace a toilet myself?
You can, with caveats: you need the right wax ring, silicone around the base and steady hands — ceramic hates being tilted. A mistake almost certainly means another leak. If you're unsure, calling a pro upfront is cheaper.
