A bathtub leak shows up in different ways: a puddle at the base, a wet ceiling at the neighbours, mould along the wall joint. Here's how to figure out which of several typical locations you're dealing with.
5 typical sources
- Trap and overflow assembly. The most common case: poorly tightened joints or worn gaskets. Visible right after draining water.
- Joint between the tub and the wall. Silicone or the "plastic trim" has come off — water gets under the tiles and drains under the tub.
- Mixer supply line. The flex hose has lost its seal or the thread on the eccentric has cracked.
- Crack in the tub itself. Typical for acrylic and thin steel tubs — from an impact, standing on the edge or loading.
- The bath panel hides a pipe in the wall. You see water under the tub, but the source is actually a hidden pipe in the wall, not the trap.
What you can do yourself
If you can reach the trap (panel is removable or there isn't one), try:
- Place newspaper under the trap and fill the tub to different levels. Wet spots show where it drips — nuts on top, side or bottom.
- Gently tighten the plastic nuts by hand (no tools) — silicone gaskets sometimes reseat.
- Refresh the silicone around the tub if it has cracked and pulled away from the tile.
If water is pooling under the tub and the tub is built into a podium, a plumber is needed: you have to remove the panel or partially dismantle the cladding.
When you need a plumber
- Water is leaking only to the neighbours below while it's dry under your tub — likely a hidden pipe in the wall.
- The mixer supply "weeps" at the thread and sealant doesn't help.
- The tub is acrylic with a hairline crack — epoxy patching is pointless, you need restoration or replacement.
- Trap and drain are plastic but the joints are failing from thermal expansion — the whole assembly gets replaced.
How much it costs in Israel
- Trap and overflow replacement — 350–600 ₪
- Flex hose and mixer replacement — 400–750 ₪
- Resealing the tub-to-wall joint — 250–450 ₪
- Acrylic tub restoration (liquid acrylic, inlay) — from 800 ₪
- Re-setting the tub with re-plumbed lines — from 1,500 ₪ labour
- Full bathtub replacement — from 1,800 ₪ labour plus the tub
About insurance and downstairs neighbours
If the bathroom leak is already showing up at the neighbours' as ceiling stains — take photos right away and notify your insurance before any DIY fixes. In Israel this is a standard ביטוח דירה scenario, but a report from a licensed plumber is usually required. KABLAY helps you find such a pro and submit the claim together with documentation.
Frequently asked
A puddle under the tub — must be the trap, right?
Usually yes, but not always: water can run along a sloped floor from a wall with a hidden pipe leak, or from an adjacent mixer. Figure out the exact source — otherwise you'll swap the trap and still have a leak.
How much does it cost to replace a bathtub trap?
Plumber's work is 350–600 ₪ including parts. If the bath panel is non-removable or the tub is built in, add 200–400 ₪ for removing/refitting the cladding.
What should I do about a crack in an acrylic tub?
Hairline cracks are restored with liquid acrylic (from 800 ₪); through-cracks need an acrylic inlay or a tub replacement. Home epoxy lasts a couple of weeks — don't bother.
Neighbours below complain about stains. Is it definitely me?
Not necessarily — the stain could be from their own leak or a hidden shared pipe. Better to call a plumber, run a dyed-water test and document the result — it'll help with insurance and the conversation with your neighbours.
