The same area can require very different work. Show the tiler the base and list the extra stages so quotes can be compared.
The base comes first
Loose, wet or uneven surfaces need preparation before tiling. Photograph existing floors or walls, cracks, loose tiles and signs of leaks. Discuss waterproofing and falls to drains separately in bathrooms and on balconies.
What changes the price
Tile size and material, pattern, cuts, openings, surface condition and access all affect labour. Demolition, levelling, waterproofing, grout, silicone, skirting and disposal may be separate. Ask for one itemised quote with clear responsibilities.
How to inspect the result
Agree joint width and layout before work starts. At handover check the plane in side light, joint lines, thresholds, corners and junctions. In wet areas request photos of concealed layers before they are covered. First-use time depends on the specified materials.
Include in your request
- Area, city and photos of each surface.
- Tile material, size and spare quantity.
- Demolition, preparation, waterproofing and disposal scope.
- Niches, drains, sockets, stairs and other difficult details.
Frequently asked
Why do square-metre prices differ?
Compare scope first: one quote may include grout and preparation while another covers laying only. Tile format and cuts also change labour.
Can new tiles go straight over old ones?
Only after checking bond, height, moisture and material suitability. A failing old layer should not be hidden.
Who buys adhesive and grout?
Agree before work and name the products in the quote. They must suit the tile, substrate and exposure.
